This may be a jail alternative to a way to a lighter sentence.  Judges will sometimes let DUI/DWI defendants take a course or attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings instead of doing jail time.  Many communities even have free treatment programs that could be used if you do not have insurance.
